The comments sparked a backlash from activist group while many Italians boycotted the famous pasta product. Rival Casa Buitoni also seized the opportunity to announce that it "welcomes gays".

CEO Claudio Colzani said the firm is committed to promoting diversity because “we firmly believe it is the right thing to do.”
He added that “diversity, inclusion and equality have been part of the Barilla code of ethics for some time, as reflected in our employee benefits, which are extended without regard to age, disability, gender, race, religion, or sexual orientation.”
