Fake 'dentist' prosecuted for botched surgeries

A 67-year-old man who claimed to be a dentist has been prosecuted for a series of botched surgeries which left his patients in pain and out of pocket.

The impersonator, who is a dental technician, carried out the dodgy dental work last year in Malmö, southern Sweden, the Expressen newspaper reported.

One woman went in to have some teeth filed down after she reported having enamel damage. She was charged 10,000 kronor ($1500) plus another 5,000 for removing tartar by the fake dentist.

After seeking a second opinion, a real dentist told her the previous dental work had been botched and she had to pay another 6,500 kronor to repair the damage.

Another victim was a man who had a hole in a tooth which needed a filling. In a police hearing he said a qualified dentist told him there was a nasty smell from his mouth when he was getting the botched surgery corrected.

Two qualified dentists have provided detailed medical reports to the police revealing how the fake dentist treated the two individuals.

At a police hearing the accused admitted carrying out certain procedures but denied that he ever claimed to be a dentist. However, the prosecution revealed that he had business cards which suggested the contrary.

The man has since been reported to the National Board of Health and Welfare (socialstyrelsen) on suspicion of violating the dental security law.

He said in a police hearing that he planned to hire two Bulgarian dentists to work with him but they never came to Sweden.
