M&S opens new Paris store amid expansion
British supermarket giant Marks and Spencer is set to continue its expansion in France, it seems, with plans top open 10 more stores over the coming years. The first of the new shops, located near the Eiffel Tower in Paris, opened its doors for the first time on Wednesday.
There was good news on Wednesday for British and Irish expats who crave the odd sausage and bacon sandwich accompanied by a proper cup of tea.
As well as opening up a new Paris store in Paris's 15th Arrondissement on Wednesday Marks and Spencer announced they plan to expand their presence in France, with “around 10” new stores located in transport hubs due to open by 2018. It has been reported that the RER station at La Défense will be home to the first of the new stores, which will open as early as next summer
In partnership with French retailer Relay France, “the stores will offer M&S’s fresh food catalogue and will be located at key railway stations, metro stations and airports,” the British supermarket giant said in a statement on Wednesday.
At one time, Marks and Spencer had 18 outlets in France but all were forced to close down as the company tried to cut down on costs. The supermarket's absence from French high-streets only ended in 2011 with the long-awaited launch of their flagship Paris store on the Champs Elysées.
Since then it has added branches in the Paris suburb of Levallois-Perret, and at the Aéroville shopping centre near Charles de Gaulles airport.
On Wednesday, a brand new Marks and Spencer location opened its doors at Beaugrenelle near the Eiffel Tower in the 15th arrondissement of the French capital.
The new store features an 800m² food hall packed with British products, a café and a clothing department, according to a statement from the company.

"I just wish I had packed more bacon when I moved here."
Marks and Spencer isn’t the only brand to bring a smile to the face of countless expats with its presence in Paris.
Last month The Local reported how US fast food chain Burger King was set to bring lovers of Le Whopper an early Christmas present by opening a new outlet at Gare St. Lazare in December, after 16 years away from the French capital.
Burger King returned to France last December with a location in the southern city of Marseille, followed swiftly by a second location near Reims.
Irish clothing retailer Primark announced in September it would be opening its first French store in Marseille in December, with four additional locations planned by the spring of 2014, in the eastern city of Dijon and the suburbs of Paris.
