The Vatican is on the hunt for the culprit who misspelt the name Jesus on 6,000 medals commemorating the first year of Pope Francis' reign.

The sale of the medals has been scrapped after Jesus was spelt with an "L" instead of a "J" in an inscription around the edge.

Four of the medals were sold after their release on Wednesday, but savvy collectors soon spotted the mistake.

The medals were made by the Italian State Mint, which blames the Vatican for making the mistake in the mold, according to a report on Giornalettismo.com.

"If the project is in our hands, then we control everything, but in this case it was brought to us 'job done'," the company said.

The medals have now been withdrawn from sale and will have to be reprinted.

Still, all is not lost for the few who managed to snap a medal up in time: the Vatican says they will probably be of value in years to come because of their rarity.

The medals are only sold through official sources. All are numbered and come with an authenticity certificate from the Vatican Secretariat of State.

New medals are made when every new pope is elected and provide a source of income for the Vatican.
