More women in Italy drink beer than those in Ireland, Britain and Germany, according to a study by AssoBirra, an Italian beer association.

Six out of ten Italian women now guzzle beer, the study said.

Alberto Frausin, the president of AssoBirra, says women’s attitudes towards beer have changed drastically since the 1980s, when they would grimace at its taste and worried it would make them fat. Finding a woman who liked beer during this period would have been “impossible”, he added.

Women in southern Italy drink more beer than those in the north, the study found.

That said, Italian women might enjoy beer more nowadays, but they trail behind the excesses of their European counterparts when its comes to quantity, with per capita consumption being just 14 litres, compared to 64 litres being drunk by the Irish, 56 litres by the Spanish and Czechs, 40 litres by the Germans and Russians and 22 litres by British women.

The change in attitude towards beer among Italian women has been helped by certain brands becoming “more feminine”, and containing less alcohol and calories, such as with the “clear and light” ranges, the study found.
