It was news that rocked Spain on Tuesday: the country's adults have the worst maths skills of the 23 countries the OECD tested.

To make matters worse, Spaniards also notched up the second worst results for reading comprehension. Only Italy scored worse for literacy.

Take the test and try out some of the OECD's reading and maths questions for yourself.

But perhaps the most worrying fact is that 30 percent of Spanish adults scored 1 out of 5, or even below, meaning they can only understand only simple texts and basic calculations.

The results caused a lot of soul searching, and some mud slinging too.

Spain's current Secretary of State for Education Montserrat Gomendio blaming Spain's poor results on the policies of previous socialist government in Spain.

But rather than get involved in politics, we at The Local thought we would give you a chance to look at some of the questions for yourself.

The questions in our gallery are in English, but Spanish test takers took their test in the Spanish language.

Questions were identical in many cases, but cultural differences meant some of the questions were slightly different.

What do you make of them? Does Spain now need to pick up its educational game?
