A total of 131,072 people were registered as being without work on September 30th, 1,116 more than at the end of August, the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (Seco) said.

Unemployment a year earlier was 2.8 percent.

The rate has remained largely unchanged for the last three months following declines for five months.

Foreigners account for almost half (44.6 percent) of the country's unemployed, Seco said.

The unemployment rate for non-Swiss rose to 5.6 percent from 5.5 percent, while the rate for Swiss citizens stayed unchanged at 2.2 percent.

The jobless rate rose in most cantons in French-speaking parts of the country and Italian-speaking Ticino, while it remained unchanged or lower in most of German-speaking Switzerland.

The rate was highest in Geneva at 5.5 percent, up from 5.4 percent the previous month, while Obwalden recorded the lowest rate at 0.7 percent, down from 0.8 percent in August.

The unemployment in Zurich was unchanged at 3.1 percent, while it rose to 3.1 percent in Basel City (up from three percent) and to 2.3 percent in Bern (up from 2.2 percent).

The rate was unchanged in Zug (2.1 percent), Lucerne (1.9 percent), Fribourg (2.7 percent), Vaud (4.9 percent) and Saint Gallen (2.3 percent).

In Ticino, it rose to 4.2 from 4.1 percent, while in Valais the rate increased to 3.4 from 3.3 percent.

Levels also edged higher in Neuchâtel (5.2 up from 5.1 percent) and Jura (3.8 up from 3.7 percent).
