Just days after it was disclosed that a New Zealand businessman paid €2.94m for an Italian paradise isle, another of the country's gems is up for sale.

The owner of Santo Stefano, part of the Pontino group of islands, situated north-west of Naples, is “open to negotiations” for the sale of about 25 acres of the island out of a total 28, according to an advertisement on Immobiliare.it.

The remaining three acres, which belong to the government, along with the site of Borbonico prison, where former Italian president Sandro Pertini was held during the fascist period, are not for sale.

The seller is reported to have already received offers for the island, described as an “unspoiled natural paradise”, although “negotiations, as well as price, are confidential”.

The advertisement also boasts, “natural views, beautiful sea and a seabed rich in fish and marine flora, making it a unique setting for those who love the sea and water sports".

A New Zealand businessman paid €2.94 million for Budelli, part of the Maddalena group which lies between Sardinia and Corsica.

Santo Stefano is known for Borbonico, the so-called “celebrity prison” due to its famous inmates, who alongside President Pertini included writer Luigi Settembrini, the brigand Carmine Crocco, the anarchist Gaetano Bresci and the bandit Sante Pollastri.

The prison opened in 1795 and has been disused since 1964.
