Bomb scare prompts Malmö school evacuation

Police evacuated two preschools in Malmö on Wednesday morning as a bomb squad moved in to examine a suspicious package, setting up a no-go zone with a 200 metre radius.

The police were alerted at 8.30am when a passer-by found several metal pipes tied together with wires outside a restaurant. Police cordoned off the area and by 9am evacuated the Annelunds and Vitemölle preschools in the southern city. Some 180 people, primarily children, were taken from the area by bus.

Police told the regional Sydsvenskan newspaper that they had not received any threats.

"It looks like some kind of piping with wires," Skåne county policy spokesman Jimmy Modin told the paper. "The bomb squad is examining the object at the scene."

"Their initial assessment is that we shouldn't have to expand the evacuation zone," he added.

By late morning, bomb technicians had dismantled the object and removed it from the area, with police calling off the warning at 11.45am and and once again allowing people back into the cordoned off area.

It remains unclear exactly what the object may have been, but police have classified the incident as an attempt at public devestation (allmänfarlig ödeläggelse).
