A cunning fox is causing a stir at the golf club of Verbier, the Alpine resort town in the canton of Valais.

The bushy-tailed animal, dubbed “foxy” by locals, has been boldly stealing golf balls from the fairway and hiding them in the bushes.

“He comes every day, steals the balls and plays with them,” Murielle Guex, manager of the Moulins snack bar, located across from the course, told the 20 Minutes newspaper.

“He picks up the balls, then immediately runs away,” Guex said.

“He is fantastic and very couragous,” she said.

“He dares to come very close to people.”

The fox first appeared on September 6th and has since absconded with more than 100 balls, according to reports.

Guex told 20 Minutes the animal has three different places to hide the balls but they remain well-hidden.

“We have searched for the balls but we have not found them,” she said.

She said it was hard to keep up with the animal because he runs too fast.

Golfers appear to be more amused than put out by the loss of their balls.

“They often laugh at it and the fox has become a sort of mascot,” Guex said.

The animal’s renown was cemented when the BBC and Swiss broadcaster RTS recently both aired reports on the cheeky thief.
