More than twenty passengers and staff have been quarantined on MS Lofoten, one of the coastal steamers that are Norway's leading tourist attraction, after they came down with a stomach bug.

"All the sick people are being isolated, so they won't be in contact with other people on the ship," Anne Marit Bjørnflaten, at Hurtigruten, the company which runs the ships, told The Local.

The company has already sent samples from the affected passengers to be tested in a lab, to ascertain the nature of the illness, which Bjørnflaten stressed did not appear to be serious.

"It seems like something where you are very sick for a day. Several members of the crew are reporting that they are already getting well."

Passengers from other Hurtigruten ships have been banned from boarding Ms Lofoten to prevent the infection spreading to other boats and a specialist cleaning company is expected to board the ship today to disinfect the public areas.

"Since this has happened on our ships before, we have very good routines, which we know work," she said.

The ship, which can accommodate 340 passengers, had just 94 passengers and a crew of six on board when the illness struck.
