Norway is trialling a new system of 'disco poles' to scare wandering elk away from oncoming road traffic.

The poles, placed every 50 metres along selected roads, will emit a piercing sound and shine flashing LED lights into the forest when an oncoming car triggers a sensor.  The hope is that this will scare elk away and prevent them leaping out onto the road and causing a collision.

"We are going to place poles with sensors along four selected roads,"  Henrik Wildenschild from Norway's Public Roads Administration (NPRA), told the Fremover newspaper. "If the system works, we hope to put them up on all routes where elk collisions occur. It is considerably less expensive than game fences."
