A 35-year-old cyclist is being tried for manslaughter after knocking over a female cyclist while powering down a pavement in north-west Oslo.

The man smashed into the woman, who then lost her balance, and fell into the busy Kirkeveien road, where she was hit by a bus. The woman was so badly injured that she died shortly afterwards from her injuries.

Police believe the rider, a keen cyclist who frequently took part in races, was travelling at such a high speed that the death constitutes manslaughter.

"My client is indescribably sorry for what happened and is extremely upset by it," Thomas Randby, the man's lawyer, told NRK.

The trial began on Monday.
