A fresh chapter is set to open for Chancellor Angela Merkel when Germans go to the polls on Sunday – and the week also brings a new beginning for her wax figure.

A new model of the German chancellor is set to arrive at Berlin’s Madame Tussauds on Thursday.

Fifteen staff at Madame Tussauds in London have been working on the figure for four months to replace her old wax figure.

It is the first of the 100 wax celebrities on display at the Berlin attraction to be re-done, but in London replacing the figures is common – Queen Elizabeth II has been replaced 23 times.

A spokeswoman for Madame Tussauds said: "Merkel is one of our most popular figures."

Merkel's figure is wearing a trouser suit with a lilac coloured blazer and black trousers along with an amber necklace. Her hands are in their famous diamond shape.
