Over-billing doc ordered to repay health insurers

Switzerland’s top court has ordered a Geneva doctor to repay 1.3 million francs to health insurers after being found guilty of over-billing.

The practitioner has a general medicine and radiology practice, according to a report from the ATS news agency.

But for more than 15 years the doctor has been in the sights of Santésuisse, the umbrella group for Swiss health insurance companies, and more than 20 insurers.

They accuse him of billing at a rate higher than practised by other doctors performing the same services.

In 1998, the doctor was notified that he was charging rates that were well above what other doctors in the same line of work were billing.

A long legal process was subsequently launched.

On March 8th, a cantonal insurance arbitration tribunal ordered the doctor to pay 1.8 million francs to insurers to offset over-billing.

He filed an appeal with Switzerland’s supreme court which reduced the payment in a ruling released on Monday.

The court eliminated 482,000 francs stemming from services provided by the doctor in 1998 because no list of doctors and their fees for comparable services was provided by the insurers.
