Drug bags found in crash survivors' stomachs

Two men who were in a car accident in southern Sweden on Sunday are now suspected of drugs crimes after a hospital X-ray revealed suspicious packages in the stomachs of both the men.

The men were rushed to a local hospital in Helsingborg, southern Sweden, on Sunday night after they were injured in what police labelled a "serious" car crash. Their car careened through a roundabout and flipped over, officers told the Helsingborg Dagbladet newspaper.

One of the men sustained serious injuries from the crash, with the other passenger escaping with minor injuries.

When the men, both 28, arrived at the hospital, doctors found suspicious packages in their stomachs during an X-ray, believed to be plastic bags containing drugs that the men had swallowed.

The two men were then arrested at the hospital on the suspicion of drug offences. The men are currently being guarded while still in the hospital, where doctors fear the packages could burst.

Helsingborg is one of two port cities in southern Sweden with direct links to Denmark and therefore mainland Europe. In July four drug smugglers in the area were jailed for their part in Sweden's biggest drug haul.
