Drugs trade behind Gothenburg shootings
The drugs trade is thought to be the reason behind the recent escalation of violence in Gothenburg in western Sweden.
"It's a frightening development," said Dan Windt, head of the city's narcotics police, told the local GT daily.
The shootings, which have left two men dead and two in hospital in past ten days, are reported to be a way for gangs to mark their territory in the hashish market.
The fact that more and more "ordinary" people usually hashish has made drug sales more profitable in Sweden and criminals are seeking to cash in and gain control of the lucrative trade.
The city has in the past ten days been hit by a spate of shootings which began with the slaying of two men in the Hisingen area of the city on September 4th.
The two victims, aged 17 and 28, were taken to hospital but later died from their injuries. Police have classified the incident as murder or possibly manslaughter.
Police were then called to the suburb of Hammarkullen in eastern Gothenburg shortly before 9.30pm on September 6th following reports of a shooting which left one man in hospital.
A further shooting last Sunday in Hisingen which left one man in hospital is believed to have been revenge for Wednesday's attack. Police were called to the scene shortly after 6am on Sunday to find a man with shot wounds to the leg.
