Weather agency calls time on Swedish summer

Swedish weather agency SMHI has urged sun-lovers to take advantage of the warm weather this weekend, forecasting that the autumn will arrive with a vengeance this week.

Unseasonal September temperatures are forecast for many parts of the country over the weekend.

"The temperature in the southeastern parts of the country will get up to 20 degrees," said Sandra Andersson, meteorologist at SMHI.

Northern areas will however experience a little rain and unstable weather on Saturday which is set to spread across the country on Sunday as the autumn begins its inexorable advance.

"Then we expect more typical autumn weather. From next week, this is what will apply across the country," Andersson said.

The autumnal temperatures will arrive by virtue of a low pressure front to the west of Scandinavia, which will bring rain into Sweden this week. SMHI was unable to forecast how heavy the rain is set to be, but the weather suggests that it may be time to dig out the boots and umbrellas.

"Clouds will dominate the sky and the rain will pass periodically," Sandra Andersson said.

SMHI forecasts that in localized areas the rainfall can be quite heavy.
