Man shot dead in Stockholm 'execution'
A 22-year-old man was shot dead by Örby school in southern Stockholm on Friday night in an incident described by police as an "execution".
Police were called to the scene at around 12.30am following reports of shots and arrived to find the man already dead. A witness to the slaying reported having heard five shots and a man screaming.
"He was found deceased at the scene," said Mats Almquist at Stockholm police.
Police confirmed that the man is previously known to them.
"It's not just a random killing. It is clear that the perpetrators are similar to their victim. You may interpret it as an execution, they were out to kill," said Elizabeth Wernsten at south Stockholm police to the Expressen daily.
A large party of police and ambulances arrived at the scene and the area will undergo forensic examination on Saturday.
No suspects had been arrested for the slaying by 8.30am on Saturday. Some 30 police officers are reported to be hunting for the two men who were seen at the scene.
According to statistics from 2009, Stockholm's murder rate is in line with other capital cities, with an average of three murders per 100,000 inhabitants per annum. The figure is up from a low of 0.6/100,000 in the 1950s, but significantly down on the 19th and previous centuries.
