The attack took place in the town of Den Bosch, formally known as 's-Hertogenbosch, in the centre of the country. The Swedish woman was found wounded at around 8.30am on Tuesday and died later in hospital.

On early Tuesday evening, local police arrested a man in Utrecht who is believed to have been responsible for the attack. The man is believed to have previously been in a relationship with the victim.

Police were able to track down the man after three tip-offs came in following the airing of Opsoring Verzocht, a Dutch criminal investigation television programme.

The Swedish woman had received death threats from the man before, according to the Dutch Omroep Brabant newspaper, and informed her school teacher the day before the murder.

The girl's tutor at college had been keeping notes about the ex-boyfriend.

Dutch media reported that the victim had a special relationship with the police, and any emergency calls she made would always be immediately connected to the police rather than directed to a switchboard.

A friend of the victim, who has been named as Saga in the Dutch media, told the Omroep Brabant paper that her friend's death news spelled the saddest day in her life.

"Saga was a pretty, smart and hard-working girl. She never hurt a fly. I can't believe that anybody would want to hurt her. It's unbelievable," she told the paper.
