Tree-bound thief calls cops for help

A man who was stuck in a tree called emergency crews for help, claiming he'd been the victim of a robbery. But police soon had doubts about the man's story.

The incident took place on in the early hours of Saturday morning at a tall tree in Nässjö in south central Sweden.

Emergency services received a call from a man who said he was stuck in a tree and needed help getting down. He told authorities he'd scampered up into the tree after having been robbed, the local Smålands Dagblad newspaper reported.

But as soon as crews had helped the self-proclaimed robbery victim down from the tree, police decided to detain him.

What the tree-bound man didn't realize is that police had been tracking a suspected robber in the area from a theft reported several hours earlier.

And it was at the base of the tree in which the man had been stuck that sniffer dogs that had been hot on the thief's trail had lost the scent.

The man's claims that he'd been the victim of a robbery became even less credible when it was later discovered that the loot from the earlier theft was also stuck in the tree along with the man.

The man was detained on suspicion of robbery. It remains unclear, however, if he had a role in a spate of other thefts reported in the area recently.
