Gothenburg holds crisis meet over shootings

Gothenburg city council held a crisis meeting on Monday to discuss a response to the spate of gangland shootings in recent days which have left two men dead and two needing hospital treatment.

"We have to tighten weapons legislation," chairwoman Anneli Hulthén said, describing the shootings as "completely unacceptable".

The meeting, which lasted for 90 minutes and was followed by a press conference, was described as an information meeting between the politicians and the police.

"The most important thing is that we keep up the good cooperation that exists between the municipality and the police, even if it is shaky at the moment there are also some positive results," said Social Democrat councillor Ann Johansson in a chat with the local Göteborgs Posten after the meeting.

"It wasn't a decision meeting, it was for the police and the municipality to become informed about what has happened, what is being done and what is planned," she said.

The city has in the past week been hit by a spate of shootings which began with the slaying of two men in the Hisingen area of the city last Wednesday. Witnesses reporting 20 shots being fired in the fatal shooting.

The two victims, aged 17 and 28, were taken to hospital but later died from their injuries. Police have classified the incident as murder or possibly manslaughter. The police have meanwhile expressed some doubt as to whether the men were the intended targets.

Police were then called to the suburb of Hammarkullen in eastern Gothenburg shortly before 9.30pm on Friday evening following reports of a shooting which left one man in hospital.

It remained unclear on Monday whether there was any link to Wednesday's killings.

A shooting on Sunday in Hisingen which left one man in hospital is however believed to have been revenge for Wednesday's attack. Police were called to the scene shortly after 6am on Sunday to find a man with shot wounds to the leg.

The police have expressed concern that innocent bystanders will be hurt in what has been described as gang war.
