Cop forgets loaded gun in Stockholm hotel

A loaded gun was found at a hotel in central Stockholm near where US President Barack Obama is expected to spend the night on Wednesday, having reportedly been forgotten there by a police officer in the president's security detail.

"It concerns a loaded service weapon forgotten by a police officer," said police spokesperson Varg Gyllander to the Expressen daily, which first reported on the incident.

According to the newspaper's report, the gun was found by security staff at the Hilton hotel by Slussen which is located just a few hundred metres from the Grand Hôtel where Obama is expected to stay the night.

The police officer is reported to have been on duty as part of the massive security operation which has accompanied the US leader's visit to the Swedish capital, the first time a sitting US president has dropped by.

This is however not the first time a Swedish police officer has been less than meticulous with the whereabouts of their weapon. The Local reported in September 2011 about a police officer who had left their gun in an Ikea toilet.

The foul up comes at a sensitive time for the Stockholm police with a high profile guest in the city.

"A report has been filed, but I don't know what the classification will be. I guess misconduct," Varg Gyllander told Expressen.

Gyllander revealed that the gun in question was a Sig Sauer automatic pistol.
