Forecasters are predicting a return to summer temperatures for much of Germany later this week despite the chilly autumnal weather seen in the first days of September.

Summer highs of 30C could return to some areas of the country by the end of the week, meteorologists from the German Weather Service (DWD) said.

Despite a cooler weekend and start to the week, forecasters believe that autumn has not quite arrived yet with temperatures hotting up as the week progresses.

Particularly hot weather is expected in south west Germany with highs of 30C on Wednesday, while coastal areas are predicted to have temperatures of 20C by Wednesday.

South west Germany could enjoy temperatures of 27C as early as Tuesday. Across Germany temperatures will range from 23C to 30C on Thursday.

Forecasters do not know yet how long the warm front will last.
