"Zurich Insurance Group is in mourning following the death of its Group CFO, Pierre Wauthier, whose body was found this morning at his home," the Swiss insurer said in a statement, adding that it would not disclose further details out of consideration for his family.

"The police are investigating the exact circumstances," the statement said.

Wauthier, born in 1960 and a citizen of both Britain and France, worked for financial multinationals KPMG and JP Morgan, as well as for the French foreign ministry, before joining Zurich Insurance in 1996.

He was appointed the insurer's chief financial officer two years ago.

The company's group controller, Vibhu Sharma, will temporarily take over as financial chief, Zurich Insurance said.

Wauthier's death comes as Switzerland remains shaken by the death of another top executive at a Swiss company.

The 49-year-old head of the Swisscom telecom operator, Carsten Schloter, committed suicide in late July.
