Two women in central Germany ended a lifelong friendship over a broken toilet. One tried to sue the other when she ripped the toilet from a wall by sitting on it and refused to pay half of the repair costs.

The women, both in their 40's, have been friends since childhood but were embroiled in a civil hearing at Hannover's regional court on Thursday over the broken toilet.

One of the women, who the court heard was overweight, went to the other's house for a party in 2012. But a trip to the bathroom ended in disaster when she sat on the toilet, and it came away from the wall.

Her friend asked her to pay half of the damages - €479.40 – but she refused. Her friend then took the case to a solicitor.

After a 45-minute hearing, the claimant decided to throw out her complaint after the judge made it clear that her friend was not going to be found guilty of negligence or malice.

Whether or not the women will be able to rescue their 33-year-long friendship is still unclear, but a spokesman for the court said on Thursday that “they did not part ways in the best of moods.”
