The 47-year-old was attempting to jump from the Sass Pordoi peak in the Dolomites, which stands at around 3,000m, Italian daily La Repubblica reported.

A base jumper leaps from a high point and falls before releasing their parachute and gliding to safety.

For an unknown reason, the Canadian’s flightpath went wrong and he was thrown against a cliff face before falling into a gorge.

His wife had just successfully finished the same jump when the accident happened at around 10:00am, the paper said.

Mountain rescue teams attended the scene but were unable to save him.

The Canadian embassy in Rome was not immediately available for comment.
