Wildfires in Sardinia have forced 100 people from their homes and destroyed at least 2,000 hectares of vegetation.

A retirement home on the island was evacuated and 40 people from the central town of Laconi slept in the local school on Thursday night, L'Unione Sarda reported.

Flames spread up a street in the town of Sinnai, in the south of the island, as firefighter battled against the flames.

A number of fires, which erupted on Wednesday, are still raging and so it is difficult to assess the full extent of the damage, L'Unione Sarda said.

In June, wildfires on the island also forced over 100 families from their homes.

Temperatures across Italy have hit 40C in recent days.
