'Cute' Norwegians flirt with American TV debut
While its Scandinavian neighbours take turns selling violent remakes of Nordic Noir abroad, Norway is poised to add flavour to the global TV listings with an American remake of dysfunctional family drama Koselig med peis.
The NRK network reported on Friday that the producers of the television series are in talks with colleagues across the Atlantic to potentially put together an American remake, with the working title Norwegian Cute. Cinematographer Daniel Voldheim revealed this week that he and Torjussen had inked a contract with US producers FilmEngine in Los Angeles.
"The deal is that they have one year to find a partner to finance and broadcast the series in the States," Voldheim told NRK, adding that while the series has been praised at home, he wasn't sure the series would fly in the States.
"I thought that perhaps the series was a bit too dark for the American audience," he said.
The tale of the Borch-Hansen family centres around the alcoholic patriarch Frank, and in the words of the producer Torfinn Borkhus, treats a topic as "boring as the fear of turning into your parents". Norwegian script writer Thomas Seeberg Torjussen won a Norwegian Gullruten television award after the series premiered on TV2 in 2012.
But who would pick up the baton to play the son and central charager Georg, asked NRK. Georg is played by Norwegian actor Anders Baasmo Christiansen, mostly known across the rest of Scandinavia for walking around with frozen peas in his underwear to curb the penal swelling after a shag-a-thon in "Norway's most easily shagged town, Kristiansand" in the dysfunctional comedy series Dag.
