Pushed for time, the couple had sought the help of the police in their bid to reach Gällivare hospital for the delivery. However, the baby had no intention of waiting any longer and the vehicle was forced to pull up on the motorway.

Officers assisted in the birth of a baby boy who arrived at 10.23pm in the back seat of the vehicle which was parked in the vicinity of Moskojärvi.

The ambulance which had been dispatched from Gällivare arrived shortly after and took care of the family who were able to complete their journey to the hospital.

"The officers were taken aback by the experience and were given time to recover," according to a statement by Norrbotten police.

One of the police officers involved in the birth, Anders Malmström, explained in a statement that it was a question of focusing on the job at hand.

"Naturally it was a little out of the ordinary. But you have to focus on doing your job and help out as best as you can," he said.

The family are reported by local media to be doing well and are recovering in the relative comfort of a hospital bed.
