Sweden Democrat in Almedalen rape case

A senior male member of the Sweden Democrats is facing accusations of rape after being reported to police by a female party colleague during Sweden's Almedalen political week on the island of Gotland.

According to tabloid Aftonbladet on Wednesday, the man in question has for many years been one of the leading figures of the party.

"I was asleep, but when I woke up he was lying in my bed," the woman told the newspaper. "We do not know each other, but I have met him previously at various party functions."

After the woman reported the incident to police on July 9th, the man has seemingly been been purged from the party with all of his details removed from their website.

The man however asserts his innocence and insists it was his decision to be removed from political duties.

"There is nothing that I know I have done that could be the basis for a complaint," he told Aftonbladet.

"As soon as I found out about the accusation, I removed myself from all political duties." he told Aftonbladet.

He added that the party supports his decision. "I am doing it for the sake of the Sweden Democrats.

"It would be strange for two party representatives to be in conflict with each other. Until everything is resolved, I remain a private person," he said.

The rape allegations come in the wake of a previous incident in March when a senior Sweden Democrat official left his post after being accused of sexual harassment by several women in the party.
