Swedish judge hires own daughter as clerk

A judge at the district court in Mora in central Sweden has hired her own daughter as a deputy court clerk, prompting accusations of potential breach of conduct and corruption.

"No person who is hiring can take decisions, in terms of a government employment, for their own child or any other close relative. When you are employing, you have to be impartial and make decisions that do not favour your own family," said Professor Lena Marcusson at Uppsala University to Sveriges Radio (SR).

The judge's daughter was employed at the court in 2011 as a deputy court clerk and has since then continued to work as summer holiday cover.

The judge told SR that she had been in contact with the National Courts Administration (Domstolsverket) about the issue, and claimed that the situation at the court was turbulent when the appointment was made.
