Official tour guides will be given a free ticket to the site marked with their membership number, the superintendent responsible for the archeological sites of Pompeii and Naples said.

“Entrance to the site will be allowed only with the free ticket and a note from the ticket office. This procedure must be repeated for each visit,” Teresa Cinquantaquattro said, quoted in local newspaper Il Mattino.

The instructions were sent to the site's ticketing body and local police, Il Mattino reported, in a bid to improve the site's image by ridding Pompeii of unregistered guides.

The announcement comes days after UNESCO warned the Italian government to speed up restoration work at Pompeii, giving the ministry of culture an end of year deadline.
