Budget airline Germanwings, a subsidiary of Lufthansa, could be hit by strikes in the next few weeks it was reported on Friday. Summer walkouts would mean a disruption in air travel at one of the busiest times of the year.

The airline has apparently been in talks with the union that represents cabin crew (UFO) over an increase in wages. With nothing agreed, a strike by Germanwings staff is thought imminent, Spiegel Online reported on Friday.

According to Spiegel Online, a poll within UFO showed that 98 percent of the 80 percent that voted would be in favour of walkouts.

For now, a compromise is being discussed among the union and Germanwings. Lufthansa allegedly wants to employ new cabin staff on a two-year contract, while UFO is pushing for more permanent contracts.

Ideally, two contracts would be offered. A shorter one for those only planning a brief stint in the industry, and a more lasting one for those wanting a career in the air.

Further discussions have been scheduled for Friday night.
