Italy evaluates Snowden asylum application
The Italian government said on Tuesday that it is evaluating an asylum request made by fugitive US intelligence leaker Edward Snowden.
“We are contemplating the request. The answer will depend on the government’s evaluation,” a foreign ministry spokeswoman said.
Italy dubbed the request “irregular” as it was received by fax rather than being made in person.
Snowden has been stuck in the transit zone of Moscow Sheremetyevo Airport since arriving on June 23rd, unable to travel after the US revoked his passport.
He has made fresh asylum claims in 21 countries, WikiLeaks announced on Tuesday, in addition to earlier requests to Ecuador and Iceland.
Snowden’s asylum claim has already been rejected by India, Poland and The Netherlands, while he has withdrawn his request to Russia after Moscow told him he would have to stop leaking US intelligence reports, a Kremlin spokesman said on Tuesday.
