Six die in Swedish Midsummer traffic

A total of six people died in traffic accidents in Sweden over the Midsummer weekend, with three people dying Sunday evening in a head on collision on the E10 motorway near Överkalix in the far north.

The accident occurred in Svartbyn and according to the Aftonbladet the crash involved two vehicles and occurred at around 5.30pm on Sunday evening.

"The woman is dead and also one person in the other car," said Erik Johansson of the Norrbotten police.

Confirmation arrived later that a second man had died from his injuries.

The accident brought the total number of fatalities for the notoriously bloody Midsummer weekend to six.

The first fatal accident occurred on Thursday when a 65-year-old woman died from her injuries in a single vehicle accident on the E4 motorway in Mehedby north of Uppsala in central Sweden.

On Saturday a man died when he drove into a ravine in Medelpad in northern Sweden and was left crushed under his minibus.

A 50-year-old died on Sunday evening after driving off the road with his motorcycle near Skamhed south of Vansbro in central Sweden.

A further three people were seriously injured in a truck accident in Gothenburg. the trio - two men and one woman - remain in a critical condition, according to Ulf Lörstad at Västra Götaland police.

The three people were travelling in a truck when the vehicle hit a pillar in the Tingsstad tunnel.
