Thunderstorms threaten Swedish Midsummer

As Swedes are busy getting ready for Midsummer festivities and hoping for a picnic in the fresh air, weather agency SMHI has issued a warning for heavy thunderstorms across southern and western Sweden.

"It's not often we warn about thunder. We expect there to be a great deal of thunder, especially along the west coast," said Malin Anteros, meteorologist at SMHI.

The storm is expected to push in across the southern province of Skåne during the morning and then move northward during the day. Heavy rainfall is forecast in localized areas which may affect traffic and road conditions.

"When a lot of large rain drops fall it can become difficult to see. Then you need to slow down or you will see nothing," Malin Anteros said.

Central and northern areas are however set to enjoy a sunnier Midsummer's Eve, with the coast of Norrland the destination of choice.

"If you want to avoid rain Norrland will be fine on Friday. Along the coast of Norrland it will definitely be a sunny and pleasant Midsummer's Eve," said Sandra Andersson, meteorologist at SMHI.

The forecast for Baltic Sea islands Öland and Gotland, which previously looked bright, has worsened somewhat.

"It now looks like it will be partially cloudy and unfortunately some rain and thunder," Sandra Andersson said.
