Swedish princess bride escapes traffic fine

Stockholm City Police have decided not to issue Princess Madeleine a fine for driving in the bus lane a few days before her high-profile wedding, after confusion about her rights to use the lane.

The police stopped the younger princess as she drove a black Volvo down the bus line by the Kungsträdgården park in the heart of the city. With four days left until her wedding, the princess showed them a note from the Royal Court that stated she was allowed to use the bus lanes.

At the time, the intervening officers let the princess go without fining her, but Stockholm Police, however, eventually did a U-turn and said they would be sending her a 1,000-kronor ($155) fine. That decision has now been overturned.

"The case has been closed, there will be no fine," City police traffic unit spokesman Leif Marklund told the Aftonbladet newspaper.

The Royal Court reacted angrily at the time of the incident over the use of the word "immunity", claiming that Princess Madeleine had made no such claim, but instead referred to court's fleet of vehicles that have certain access privileges.

"She has not spoken of immunity; she just showed the policeman the ruling from the County Administrative Board," Royal Court spokesman Bertil Ternert told the Svenska Dagbladet newspaper.

"She was absolutely not claiming any kind of immunity. When she is in Sweden, she has on certain occasions the permission to drive the Royal Court's cars and that was what she was doing in this occasion."

"We are not pursuing it because of circumstances pertaining to the case," City police spokesman Hans Brandt told Aftonbladet late on Monday.
