A 78-year-old woman at a beach resort in Spotorno, north-west Italy, got into hot water with police over the weekend for allegedly stalking an unsuspecting young lifeguard.

The elderly woman, who comes from the city of Biella in the Piedmont region of northern Italy, was apparently on holiday at the beach resort when she became captivated by a young lifeguard working there, reports La Stampa’s regional Vercelli edition.

According to the paper, she became increasingly persistent and within a few weeks innocent looks had progressed to clandestine notes and unwanted touching.

She was reported by the owner of the beach resort for her behaviour, which he described as “incessant”. This was later confirmed by the commander of the local police, Andrea Saroldi.

“At the beginning the incident was laughable,” the owner of the beach resort told the newspaper. “A woman aged almost 80 was interested in a young man who was less than a third of her age. Of course, this doesn’t happen every day.”

“She kept coming closer, just centimetres away from our lifeguard, who needs to monitor all swimmers and therefore should not be distracted or disturbed while he’s on his stand.”
