Garbage stench threatens royal wedding

A raging fire at a refuse station in Täby in northern Stockholm could leave the city bathed in the stench of burning garbage, threatening to leave a less than fragrant blessing on Saturday's royal nuptials.

The fire, at a refuse station in Täby kyrkby in north-eastern Stockholm, is proving difficult to extinguish and couldn't have come at a worse time.

Princess Madeleine is set to marry her beau Chris O'Neill at 4pm on Saturday in the Old Town and the emergency services face a race against time to put out the fire and clear the air.

With time of the essence, the fire services have called in the help of the army in the battle against the fire, according to Lars Madsen at the Greater Stockholm fire department.

"The fire is continuing to rage and there are quite large amounts of material on fire," Madsen explained.

There are reported to be problems with the water supply and the fire services are hoping for help from army helicopters to water bomb the fire.

Madsen confirmed that a reply has not been received from the armed forces but is hopeful of a response on Friday morning.

The weather gods are currently being amenable with winds leading the stench away from central areas of the city, but if the winds were to change the consequences for the crowds expected on Saturday could be noxious.
