Swedes sweep top French football awards

Swedish striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic scooped up France's Ligue 1 player of the year award on Monday, with Sweden's Lotta Schelin taking home the same honour for the top French women's league.

Ibrahimovic had a remarkable season for Paris Saint-Germain, scoring 29 goals in total, more than any other player has scored in one season since 1990.

Together with British superstar David Beckham, Zlatan helped the Parisian side win its third ever title.

"It's a big honour for me and I want to thank my team-mates for this," Ibrahimovic said at a press conference in Paris, according to the official Uefa website.

"I want to say that all the other nominees would have deserved it."

In what was likely Beckham's last game on Sunday, Zlatan managed to find the net twice against Brest.

Meanwhile on the women's side, Swedish striker Lotta Schelin won the player of the year for her season with Olympique Lyonnais, a team which has finished first for seven consecutive years.

"I was surprised but very happy," she said via video at the ceremony.

"I want to thank the whole gang and the coaches."

Schelin also topped the league in goals scored this season, finding the net 23 times. She has signed a new three-year contract with the Lyon team.
