Sex in Sweden: condoms optional - study
Half of young Swedes don't use condoms when having sex with a new partner, according to a new study, which also found that 30 percent of Swedes use no contraceptive measures at all.
Overall, only 25 percent of Swedes use condoms during sexual intercourse, according to the annual "Kådiskollen" (literally: condom check), done by the Swedish Association for Sexuality Education (Riksförbundet för Sexuell Upplysning - RFSU)
"Things can be improved, of course," said Maria Bergström at RFSU to the TV4 news channel.
When it comes to 21- to 35-year-olds, around half of the respondents admitted that they did not use a condom during sex with a new partner.
This figure is taken from the group that has many different sexual partners, Bergström noted, but added that 50 percent of the group is indeed using protection, a trend that's on the rise.
"The long term trend is that condom use is going up, people are sticking a little more to their principles," she told TV4.
A third of the men said they took the initiative to use a condom, with just as many saying they always had a condom at hand.
Just over 30 percent of all surveyed respondents said that they didn't use any preventative measures at all.
When asked "If you're unhappy with your sex life, what would make it better?" the majority of male respondents said they wanted more sex, with most Swedish women claiming they wanted more orgasms.
The survey included the responses from 1,079 Swedes aged between 15 and 65.
