"For some reason the 17-year-old had climbed on the balcony and then fallen down and landed on the tarmac," said Peter Martin at Skåne police on the police webpage.

The police were called to the flat on Södra vägen at around 2.30am on Saturday morning and a unit arrived to find that a party was taking place at the location.

The teenager was taken unconscious to Lund University Hospital and is being treated in intensive care.

"His condition remains serious," a duty nurse at the hospital told the local Sydsvenskan daily on Saturday.

Police have currently classified the incident as an accident and do not suspect any criminal offence.

"At the current time it looks like a complete accident," said Annika Lindvall to the Aftonbladet daily.

According to an eye-witness report in the Expressen daily the man was seen dangling from the balcony in an apparent attempt to climb down to the balcony on the floor below, but he then fell to the ground.
