'We can't have jails with pools and plasma TVs'
Spain’s Interior Ministry has called into question the building of a new prison in the Basque country which will see each inmate have a flat screen TV in their cell and the use of a brand-new indoor pool.
Interior Minister Jorge Fernández Díaz stood up in Spain’s congress on Wednesday to speak out against San Sebastian Penitentiary’s luxurious and costly plans.
“It’s unreasonable,” he told the Spanish Congress. “The project must implement services that help to re-educate and reinsert interns into society.”
Fernández Díaz informed congress that construction of the new prison facility would be finished shortly at a cost of €8.4 million.
Basque National Party (PNV) MP Joseba Agirretxea criticized the government for slashing the new prison’s total budget from €113 million to €70 million.
Agirretxea also urged the ruling Popular Party to inform San Sebastian’s Town Hall of Fernández Díaz’s plans to revise the prison’s facilities in a bit to cut costs.
