Two Munich police officers out on their regular evening jog ended up having to call a spider man - after finding an escaped tarantula and managing to capture it in a beer glass.

The pair, brothers aged 35 and 33, regularly jog in the Olympia Park, but on Monday evening their training was interrupted by an eight-legged escape artist.

“They noticed something odd in the bushes at near them and when they got nearer they realized it was a tarantula,” a spokesman from the Munich police told The Local on Tuesday.

The younger officer kept an eye on the spider while his brother ran to a nearby beer garden and grabbed a one-litre Bavarian Maß glass. He trapped the spider with it and they called an arachnid expert at the city's zoological institute.

“They weren't scared though,” said the spokesman.

“They just thought 'what on earth is that?' before calling the right people. After that I imagine they carried on with their run as they're both very sporty.”

Tarantulas are sometimes kept as pets, but this ten-centimetre wide specimen is being housed in a special terrarium at the zoological institute. The Maß has been returned to the beer garden.
