'Hero' Swede lifts car to save trapped boy

A mystery man came to the rescue when a 7-year-old boy was run over and wedged beneath a car in eastern Stockholm on Sunday evening, with police labelling the unknown rescuer a hero.

The boy was run over by a parent who was reversing a Volkswagen Passat out of a driveway. He got stuck under the car and emergency authorities were alerted immediately, with police and ambulance services even sending a helicopter to the area.

However, what appears to have been just a solitary man was first on the scene, and lifted the rear end of the car, allowing the boy to wriggle free.

"Yes, from what has been reported, it seems to have been a strong neighbour, unknown to us, but a man by all accounts, who with the help of a parent managed to lift up the car's rear end," explained Alexandra Godlund of the Nacka police to the Dagens Nyheter newspaper (DN).

"When our patrol arrived on the scene, the man had already got the boy loose."

The boy did not sustain any serious injuries from the ordeal, but was taken to the hospital in the emergency helicopter.

Police are labelling the incident as the stuff of legends.

"This is really fantastic, it was a true hero's tale. With an unknown hero," Godlund told the paper.
