Alpine airport lands just four visitors in March
The €45 million-airport of Huesca in Spain's far north welcomed just four passengers in March as the facility signed off on a dismal start to the year.
The airport in Aragon, known officially as Huesca - Pirineos managed to attract just 37 passengers in the first three months of this year.
But in March, just four passengers used the facility, reported Te Interesa news site on Monday.
The month should have been a peak period, including as it did Spain's busy Easter holiday period.
Good snow conditions should also have attracted skiers to the resorts of the Pyrenees.
However, the total number of passengers who used Huesca's airport during the recent ski season was just 53.
Carriers including Monarch and Thomson once landed at the airport, reported the business website El Confidencial on Monday.
But the site has struggled since their departure: now only private airlines land at the facility which can boast of just nine staff..
In 2012, Huesca's aerodrome attracted just 2,446 passengers, making it Spain's least used airport, according to the country's airport corporation AENA.
Aragon's government isn't giving up on the facility just yet though, said Te Interesa.
The 37 passengers at the airport from January to March this year is actually a 27.6 percent increase on the first quarter of 2012, .
Chief executive Luisa Fernanda Rudi and the airport's central administration are also seeking investors to breathe life into the airport.
In March 2012, a group of Chinese pilots used the Huesca airport as a training site.
The airport's restaurants have also won plenty of admirers in the local community who regularly come to eat there.
