Arlanda however remained the only Swedish airport in the Skytrax list, which was topped by Singapore's Changi, followed by Incheon International Airport in Seoul and Amsterdam Schiphol Airport.

Helsinki-Vantaa is the leading airport in the Nordic region at 15th place, closely followed by Copenhagen at 17th. Oslo Airport claimed 56th spot in the rankings.

Four of the five best airports are in Asia, with Munich, Zurich and London Heathrow the other European airports featuring in the top ten.

Vancouver is the highest ranked North American airport, coming in eighth.

The Skytrax rankings are based on voting by airport customers from around the world and the 2013 survey solicited 12.1 million responses.

Sytrax explained in a statement that staff service tends to remain a key factor in the rankings, alongside ease of transfer, baggage claim expediency, ambiance and dining experience.

The survey which was first launched in 1999 evaluates 39 airport service and product performance indicators - from check-in, arrivals, transfers, shopping, security, immigration and departure.

Stockholm Arlanda Airport is Sweden's biggest airport, with 19 million passengers passing through each year on their way to 172 destinations worldwide.
