The incident occurred last winter at an apartment in the Värmland town, according to a report in the local Nya Wermlands-Tidningen daily.

The police received a call from a man who reported that he had been awoken to find himself sexually assaulted by an acquaintance.

The police arrived at the apartment to find the alleged assailant, a man in his sixties, still at the location.

The man was arrested and remanded into custody the same evening.

The man was on Friday sentenced to two years imprisonment and ordered to pay damages of 87,000 kronor ($13,600) to his victim.

Throughout the course of the trial the man maintained his innocence.

According to the court ruling, the man's actions constituted the legal definition of rape and he was convicted on the more serious charge.

The victim was reported to be drunk at the time of the incident.

The Värmland district court considered the man to have been in a condition of helplessness and that his sexual integrity had been violated.
