Over 100 German food retailers have been buying horsemeat falsely labelled as beef from a Dutch abattoir before selling it on to the public, Germany's Consumer Ministry confirmed on Thursday.

State authorities are trying to get all of the products off the shelves while carrying out a full investigation. The Netherlands-based slaughter house has sold 50,000 tonnes of horse labelled as beef for at least two years, Dutch food standards officials said on Wednesday.

At least 124 German butchers, meat dealers and food companies in all states except for Bremen and Sauerland bought horse from the distributor in question, which delivered to 370 retailers across Europe, Der Spiegel reported.

Dutch authorities have called back any remaining meat which, they said, posed no health risks. The abattoir, Willy Selten, has been shut down.
